An Orbital Sciences Corporation Antares rocket fell back to the launch pad shortly after liftoff Tuesday night, exploding in a fireball that destroyed the vehicle and damaged its launch pad. The private spaceflight company confirmed all personnel were accounted for, and no one was injured in the mishap.

For the lover of all-things-pumpkin, we’ve taste tested and approved The Great Pumpkin Beer Bread Recipe, designed to incorporate your favorite pumpkin beer. We tried the recipe with a traditional ale with spices, but would also highly recommend a pumpkin porter or stout if one is available, as the darker beers provide an extra layer of roasty richness.

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (we like Trader Joe’s Bourbon Vanilla Extract)

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/4 cup vegetable oil

15 oz canned pumpkin (for more bready, less dense/chewy bread use 1/2 a can)

2 large eggs

12 oz bottle of pumpkin ale

(For a list of some of our favorites, check out The Great Pumpkin Beer Challenge article).

via Hail To The Ale: The Great Pumpkin Beer Bread Recipe.

Ingredients
2 1/3 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 large ripe bananas mashed
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
very generous 1/2 cup Nutella
half bag of chocolate chips

Directions
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9-inch loaf pan and set aside.

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a medium-sized bowl. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until creamy. Beat in the banana and then beat in eggs and vanilla until well combined. Reduce mixer speed to low and beat in flour mixture until just combined. Divide 1/2 of the batter into a separate bowl and stir in the Nutella.

Alternate layers of regular batter and Nutella batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips generously on the top.  Bake 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into bread comes out with moist crumbs attached. Cool 10 minutes in the pan before moving to a wire rack. Let cool completely before slicing.

Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) will pass within 139,500 km (86,000 miles) of the surface of Mars at 5:51 tomorrow morning (Monday 20 Oct, Sydney time – or 19 October at 18:51 UTC). This means Comet Siding Spring will pass 10 times closer to Mars than any (recorded) comet has flown by Earth! But it will be traveling at 50 km/s which is too fast to be captured by Mars’s gravitational pull.

partly cloudycloudyUp and out in the dark, it’s a normal occurrence now. The ground was wet but dried up after the sun began to break through the clouds.

Work was a bit slow, still. Not much happening on the issue I’m working on, slow.

Mushroom

It’s Tuesday and the Movie Edge of Tomorrow, they oppositely renamed the movie to something like: Live, Die, Repeat. Whatever. Brian picked up the BlueRay for me.

I setup the Vixen 100mm OT and took some photos of the moon with the Df and then added the 2X converter and got a bit closer. Brian tried to give me some crap about not being able to focus on the trees about 300 yards away and then on the moon without having some sort of extra tube more than I already had.

Had a few beers and watched the movie with Brian upstairs. The sky cleared up but then about 9:30 the clouds began to roll in again.

Hoping the sky is good for the eclipse in the morning.

cloudymostly sunnySunny and clear in the am. Then it clouded up in the pm.

Didn’t get much accomplished today @ work, the upload and then DB insert all fail nicely in my VM.

the Knick

the Knick

Cooked up some wantons for dinner and then watched some TV. Watched the Knick on Cinemax with Clive Owen. Eve Hewson also is now his “Love” interest and plays a young nurse @ the Knick. Eve is the daughter of Bono from U2. Juliet Rylance plays a rich chick who helps out @ the Knick and plays an interesting racial part, as she starts seeing a black doctor she knew as a child and got hired @ the Knick. Both of these lovely ladies have had a few very steamy scenes in the series.

Drank a few beers and thought about setting up the telescope to get some photos of the almost full moon. I got as far as getting the scope opened up and then getting the prime focus adapter for the camera and then the clouds just seemed to be covering the moon mostly so I lost interest.
